Salzburg Part 3 - 'The Hills are Alive . . .'

While it was a beautiful city to see, the highlight of our tour of Salzburg was our delicious lunch and Sound of Music concert high up on a mountain overlooking Salzburg.

Despite the light rain, the views we saw driving up the mountain were spectacular - an idyllic location that was very suited to some of the footage of the Julie Andrews film ‘The Sound of Music’.  To add to the atmosphere we were greeted by a trumpet call, played by the wind section of the small but very talented orchestra.

The venue was just as you would expect a big Austrian eating house high up on a mountain to be, with lots of wooden beams and long wooden tables. We were the only guests, which made it even more special.

The meal was fantastic. First I had a very tasty beef broth with thinly sliced pancake in it. The pancake looked like noodles but gave the soup some body and an interesting, pleasant texture. (As a matter of fact I had a bowl of the same soup for lunch today.) Then I had a roasted chicken breast with a herb sauce and vegetable noodles, which was delicious. The dessert was a spicy to-die-for warm apple strudel with cream. Yum! Almost everyone also enjoyed Austrian beer with their meal.

Then it was time for our concert. The musicians and singers, who included some young Austrian singers, and the two dancers were very talented, top class performers. They were passionate about their songs and full of energy. We were treated to some favourite songs from ‘The Sound of Music’, an alphorn solo and a Jew’s harp solo (both fascinating instruments), a highly energetic dance that involved slapping legs and feet (called a schuhplattler dance), and music by Johann Strauss, Leopold Mozart and Rudolf Achleitner.  It was simply wonderful. Everyone just loved it!

It had been such a long day I think we all slept on the long drive back to the river ship, but we were very delighted and content.

I have not captioned these photos, as they are self-evident. As usual my computer insisted on uploading my phone camera photos first. The later photos are of views up the mountain and a photo of our trumpet welcome.
