Salzburg Austria Part 2 - wandering through the town

From walking around the old parts of Salzburg, we headed towards the cathedral and some linked city squares. In the distance we could see an ancient castle or fortress on top of the hill behind them.

In this case I will let the photos speak for me, but I must tell you I was very amused to find tee-shirts and fridge magnets in tourist shops that proclaimed ‘Austria has no kangaroos’. They must get as fed-up as we do when people get our two countries mixed up! More world geography needs to be taught in schools!

In my third post on Salzburg, I will be talking about our wonderful trip up one of the mountains for a feast and concert in which one feature song was ‘The hills are alive . . .’

I am actually writing this post in Vienna. As I look out of my hotel window, even though it is sunset it is still very warm, and I can see people are bustling about everywhere - having dinner in an outdoor cafe (which I did myself between my last two posts), tourists taking photos, locals meeting friends . . . There have been quite a few police around all day too, partly because it is a public holiday, though my tour guide for today told us that many Viennese escape into the countryside on a public holiday. Many go to the Vienna Woods. There is a waltz for that, just as there is one for the Blue Danube.

Oh but it is so great to have fast WiFi here! First time in a long time. And folks - you should see my shower - to be seen to be believed! I will post a photo of it before long. Meanwhile, back to Salzburg . . .

A square near the cathedral. The archways on the right bring you into that square. What is not shown in this photo is the line-up of horses and carriages and 'pedi-cabs' in this square to take you on sight-seeing tours.

This is the same square. Close-up photos of the brownish fountain are shown later.

Another building in this square. I think it is the museum.

A view of the ancient fortress /castle higher up.

Looking into the cathedral square.

This was supposed to be a trick photograph. At this angle, the head of the madonna in the fountain should look like it is crowned with the golden crown on the cathedral wall, but the sky was so dark and ominous this cannot be seen.

I was fascinated by this golden globe in the next square.

You can see the funicular railway up to the castle/fortress.

I just had to see the huge golden ball and the little statue on the top up close. I have no idea of its background story though.

Part of the brownish fountain to which I referred earlier.

And another side of it.

A  fresco on a nearby building.

The statue of Mozart in the next square. Unfortunately it was very dark and was spitting, so I could not do it justice.
