Pompeii Part 2 - photos taken on the wander through the ruins

Here are some photos of Pompeii. These were taken with my iPhone.

Inside the entry to the Roman Bathhouse. Notice the fresco on the ceiling.

It is thought that these hollows were the Roman equivalent of lockers for those using the bathhouse.

This cutaway shows the ingenious heating system for the water in the bathhouse. The hollow in the wall on the right was where there was a fire. The hot gases produced from this circulated through the spaces under the water.

This was one of the cubicles in one of the brothels. (There was a street of them.) Clearly these facilities were well-used as there were deep ruts in the stones of the road leading to them. It is thought that the main clients would have been sailors.

A telling fresco on the wall of the brothel.

Relics dug out of the lava, and the plaster cast of a body.

More of the relics.

The profoundly sad plaster cast of the body of a child.
