Penang - and our ship's passengers

We have now docked at Penang, which like the last ports is hot and steamy, but with a storm brewing. There was quite a lot of lightning on the way here overnight, although we have encountered overnight storms at sea before.  None seemed to make the ship any less steady though - we just keep chugging along.

Unfortunately I am still not well enough to go on a shore excursion, which is disappointing. C’est la vie! Hopefully I will get to see Sri Lanka in three days time.

So I have done the best I can do again - taken some photos from the ship. At least this time you can see the city. And there is a massive tall ship docked just near us. Even five minutes outside left me breathless, so just as well I am not out there for the day. I also have included a couple of photos taken with my camera early in the morning when we were coming into Kuala Lumpur before its lens completely fogged up.

I may not have mentioned that when I want to a cocktail party for the captain a couple of weeks ago, I discovered that at that time 60 nationalities were on board, including the crew. With the last new influx in Singapore, however, the proportion of British passengers has significantly increased and of Asian passengers has decreased. I guess the British passengers love the idea of sailing through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea back to home. Yesterday I met one such new passenger who hailed from Northern Ireland. Another British couple with whom I have been friendly for some weeks now introduced me as “the lady who cannot fly and is going on an amazing 8-month journey". He looked at me and said in his lilting Irish accent, with a twinkle in his eye: “I can’t fly either. I just catch planes!”  We all laughed our heads off at that!

It was sad to hear that the Aussie satirist John Clarke has just died. His penetrating humour will be sorely missed.

The last two photos were taken coming into Kuala Lumpur. The others were taken around the ship this morning.
